Summary

I love this series so much! And I inhaled them on audio about a year ago, when our world felt crazy and school and businesses were closed and my job at a nursing home went along as "normal" but everything felt weird and uncertain and I'd drive around on my lunch listening to the latest book。 The writing and layering of story is superb and masterful, attention to detail impressive, and characters well drawn and fleshed out。 Highly recommend。 I love this series so much! I'm not sure I can say this was enjoyable, but it was certainly satisfying。 Whilst I worked a few minor things out, the main mystery remained just that until the reveal。 The audio version initially grated, but once consumed by the characters and interplay, it didn't impede my listening。 It is a LONG listen though and I'll go back to print for future Strike books。The mastery in the writing is clear in this volume of the series and it is fair to say Ms Rowling had conquered this genre as ably as c I'm not sure I can say this was enjoyable, but it was certainly satisfying。 Whilst I worked a few minor things out, the main mystery remained just that until the reveal。 The audio version initially grated, but once consumed by the characters and interplay, it didn't impede my listening。 It is a LONG listen though and I'll go back to print for future Strike books。The mastery in the writing is clear in this volume of the series and it is fair to say Ms Rowling had conquered this genre as ably as children's literature。 。。。more

I honestly think that this huge doorstop of a book is her best work yet。 The mystery at the centre of the story is well thought out and well told, but pales in comparison to the intricate web spun that surrounds the returning characters’ lives。 She delves into the private thoughts of Strike and Robin’s will they/ won’t they relationship with the skill usually reserved for the likes of Ian McEwan。 The three-dimensional characters leap off the page, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Loved this book。 Waffled between not being able to put it down and reading slowly to make it last longer。

Bit boring and very long。

I enjoyed the rich character development and Cormoran and Robin's relationship。 Very interesting plot and characters。 Fascinating how much they found out about a cold case disappearance after so many years。 I can't find my car keys I put down an hour ago!Very enjoyable。 I enjoyed the rich character development and Cormoran and Robin's relationship。 Very interesting plot and characters。 Fascinating how much they found out about a cold case disappearance after so many years。 I can't find my car keys I put down an hour ago!Very enjoyable。 。。。more

I really like this series。 Too bad about its author。

This really dragged and took me forever to finish。 I felt like the end/wrap-up was very rushed。

It's a long read。 If you are not up to reading a lot of names and a lot of details, this book is not for you。 I did like it a lot。 The biggest challenge the writer has is keeping it up being a detective book。 Sometimes it gets very near being a sort of soap opera, but in my opinion it's still mainly a detective。 I love it that there are so many detailled complications and yet J。K。Rowling always keeps her eyes on the ball。 It's very consistent。 You might not always agree with the thoughts of the It's a long read。 If you are not up to reading a lot of names and a lot of details, this book is not for you。 I did like it a lot。 The biggest challenge the writer has is keeping it up being a detective book。 Sometimes it gets very near being a sort of soap opera, but in my opinion it's still mainly a detective。 I love it that there are so many detailled complications and yet J。K。Rowling always keeps her eyes on the ball。 It's very consistent。 You might not always agree with the thoughts of the character, but for me a character is a character and not the writer。 I certainly will pick up a next volume in this series。 I won't go into any details, I don't want to be a spoiler。 。。。more

Wasn’t sure this would work since I haven’t read others but watched the series。 It was spot on。 I actually liked being able to “see” robin and strike and their onscreen characters enhanced this storyline。 But no one warned me how slowly and methodically you have to read this! Whew。 Worth every minute cuz Rowling knows how to weave a story better than most。

。。。more

Yes, read it straight away after Lethal White and this one successfully set my standard for a mystery-crime fiction to a higher level。 Wow。Rowling is always making a good story with believable characters through her narration of the characters' lives。 And yes, it's finally Strike's chance to be written。 We finally know who are Polworth, Aunt Joan, and Uncle Ted。 Of course, we got to see the partner's change of relationship。But of course above all, the case。 Ohmy the case。 A cold case that I didn Yes, read it straight away after Lethal White and this one successfully set my standard for a mystery-crime fiction to a higher level。 Wow。Rowling is always making a good story with believable characters through her narration of the characters' lives。 And yes, it's finally Strike's chance to be written。 We finally know who are Polworth, Aunt Joan, and Uncle Ted。 Of course, we got to see the partner's change of relationship。But of course above all, the case。 Ohmy the case。 A cold case that I didn't expect to end like that。 Rowling's art of deceiving people is still strong even after her 10+ books。 The aspect of star signs and tarots adding sense of supernatural meanwhile there is also real serial killers whose still alive。 The amount of mystery, thriller, crime and horror is no joke here。Another thing that I remember enjoyed the most is the interactions among the characters, how it looks kind and。。。 humane。 In other works (literary or not) or maybe in real life, I would say that buying christmas presents for your colleagues or sending flowers to your partner are unnecesarry but here makes me think, that's what caring are supposed to be shown。 How people want to show gratitude, how we are supposed to behave to our colleague, how to give emphaty to others。 Reading this reminds me of those days when I read Potter。Things that we fear the most are possibly the things that we long so much。 Yes, I fear that this series getting nearer to the end but still I long for the continuation so much!。 。。。more

I wish that I could give it 12 stars。 I loved every book in the series, but at almost 31 hours of brilliantly narrated audio, I didn’t want it to end。 Rich noir with textured character development, I truly appreciate main characters that I miss when it’s over。

JKR, aka Galbraith, really knows how to weave a story。 The last bit of this detective novel is so much fun to read, but boy does she make you earn it。 Bad Blood probably could’ve been about half the pages and just as good。 But I still look forward to the next one。

It's a long read, but it doesn't feel long。 You get a forty year old mystery, a death in the family, and a burgeoning possible, maybe romance building and you've got an enjoyable tale。 It's a long read, but it doesn't feel long。 You get a forty year old mystery, a death in the family, and a burgeoning possible, maybe romance building and you've got an enjoyable tale。 。。。more

At nearly a thousand pages, this book was not only difficult to read physically, being so unwieldy, but also difficult to deal with the red herrings, which took up at least a third of the book。Don't get me wrong: I've enjoyed the Strike series a lot。 I like the characters (both main and secondary); their thought processes and interactions; the emotional tension in their relationship; and the city of London, which is in itself a character。 The series up till now has been enjoyable to read。What I At nearly a thousand pages, this book was not only difficult to read physically, being so unwieldy, but also difficult to deal with the red herrings, which took up at least a third of the book。Don't get me wrong: I've enjoyed the Strike series a lot。 I like the characters (both main and secondary); their thought processes and interactions; the emotional tension in their relationship; and the city of London, which is in itself a character。 The series up till now has been enjoyable to read。What I don't like about this entry (hate, actually) are the dozens of red herrings that do nothing to advance the plot other than having Strike and Robin running around in circles trying to find anyone and everyone connected to a 40-year-old cold case murder。 (I found it odd that none of them had died since the original investigation)。 And all those interviews lead the reader nowhere, in particular a very hard-to-arrange interview with a mass murder, jailed for life for the gruesome deaths of a number of women。 Perhaps because of all the attention he's given throughout the tome, it's easy enough to rule him out as the perpetrator [which is why I don't consider this a spoiler。]Also particularly annoying is the record-book of the original detective on the case who, it's made abundantly clear on many occasions, developed a debilitating mental breakdown。 This book is full of unreadable pages sampled from the book and used as illustrations, and his incongruous rantings end up playing no role whatsoever in solving the crime。 Dozens and dozens of pages are dedicated to attempts to interpret his loony scrawls, none of which lead to solving the identity of the killer。 An unrelated murder that came to light in the form of a snuff film is mentioned a number of times but never investigated, much less solved。 What was the purpose here? It's not like there's not enough padding in the book, so why bring this up at all? When the identity of the murderer and location of the body is finally brought to light, there's no "aha!" moment for the reader, and the confession of said killer comes pouring out without much work on the detectives' part。 It's one thing to sprinkle the clues among a thousand pages, and another to give the reader any chance of using those clues to solve the case。Take away all the unnecessary nonsense and you'd have a nice, tight case with the right amount of side stories (including Strike's relationship with his father, a recurring theme that fits in quite nicely, as well as the ongoing one of Robin's divorce -- tied up a bit too neatly, perhaps to get that one over and done with)。 In other words, this book could have weighed in at fewer than 600 pages without losing a bit of the action。 I wish it had。 。。。more

The longest Cormoran Strike novel, but also my favorite。 Long in spots, confusing in spots, but great plot twist on who the murderer was! The serial killer angles are awesome。 Want to know more about Robin and Strike, so hopefully I don’t have to wait too long for the next one。

Really long with lots going on but an overall good read。 I like the series but wish Strike wouldn’t smoke all the time!
